I’m excited to have completed my latest piece, In the Space Between, which will be premiered in May 2025 by New Music Mosaic. This is quite a different piece for me, and also the first piece I’ve engraved in Dorico, which I now am officially more satisfied with than Sibelius. The piece is about the linguistic differences between English and Swedish as I learn a second language. One example is the word “always.” In Swedish, it is “alltid,” which literally translates to “all time.” While both words share the same meaning and are used in similar contexts, I find the distinction between their spatial and temporal implications fascinating. In the Space Between is inspired by the differences between these two languages based on my own experience. Throughout the work, the performers are instructed to vary musical material in the “between spaces,” by gradually changing the tempo of a measure over time or shifting in and out of phase with one another.
